The gnarly, twisted moonahs with their ancient, greyed-out bark provide a striking backdrop for the new residence. Sweeping curves, sculptural forms, and a subdued material palette blend with the rough textures and colours of the trees. The silvered trunks are reflected on the brickwork colours and metal cladding whilst the internal finishes take notes of the warm tones of a tree’s heartwood. Taking advantage of the sloping site, the house is nestled into the hill, allowing living areas to spill out into the surrounding outdoor spaces. Background views of the Straits, with undulating heathland in the foreground, are framed by a series of rhythmic blades and expansive glazing. Designed as an ancestral home for a multigenerational family, the house serves as their home base; a repository of memories held within its walls. Objects, artefacts, photos, and books, each carrying a unique story, become part of the finishes of the house. Catering to contemporary living, the house includes spaces that can host generous gatherings or be sectioned off for intimate, two-person living. Despite its harsh, exposed location, The Keep ensures comfortable living while remaining deeply connected to the landscape.
